Guitar Skills Beyond the Basics

Meets Saturdays · 10:00 AM - 11:15 AM · on Zoom Fall 2026 · registration open Free to audit
This class runs in the Fall 2026 session. Registration is open now; lessons, materials, and the class discussion board are posted before it begins.

This class is for players who already know their open chords and want to clean things up and play more. We'll work on barre chords the slow, correct way, because I feel like most people muscle through and build a bad shape that follows them for years. We'll spend real time on fingerpicking, starting with the thumb, which is where the mistake usually lives. And we'll play along with recordings at different tempos so you learn to play WITH time instead of just near it.

You'll leave able to hold a few barre shapes that ring, pick a Travis pattern that holds together, and keep up with a song from start to finish. Four songs clean beats forty sloppy. Saturdays, 10:00 to 11:15. Bring your guitar and a callus in progress. 👍

What you'll learn

  • Set up your guitar for easier playing
  • Form clean E-shape and A-shape barre chords
  • Read tab and chord charts confidently
  • Fingerpick steady bass lines and Travis patterns
  • Play smoothly with a metronome and recordings

Lessons

  1. Getting the Guitar Out of Your Way

Before we fix your hands, we make sure the instrument isn't the thing fighting you.

  2. The Barre Chord, Slowly and Correctly

We learn the barre the patient way so you're not fighting an F for the next twenty years.

  3. Moving Between Chords Without Falling Apart

Clean chords are only useful if you can get from one to the next in time.

  4. Fingerpicking, Thumb First

Everybody wants to fix the fingers, but the thumb is the foundation and where the mistake usually lives.

  5. Playing With Time, Not Near It

Most players who can't play in time have simply never played with the click.

  6. Putting a Few Songs Together

We'd rather send you home with four songs clean than forty sloppy.

Class discussion

The class discussion board opens when the class begins this fall. Auditors and enrolled students ask questions and share work here once the session starts.
