Practice Run: Everyone Shuts Off Their Own Water

Okay, here's the thing. We've talked about the main shutoff. We've talked about gate valves and ball valves. We've talked about the local ones under your sinks and behind your toilets. That's a lot of talking.

Today nobody talks. Today everybody shuts off water.

Why we're doing this in class and not just "at home sometime"

Because "sometime" doesn't happen. I know this because I didn't do it. I found my own main shutoff standing in a wet garage in my socks, mid-leak, which is exactly the story I've told you already and exactly the situation I don't want any of you in.

Knowing where the valve is isn't the same as knowing you can turn it. Some valves are stuck. Some are behind a box you forgot was in the way. Some take way more muscle than you'd guess, and some barely need a nudge. You don't want to be figuring that out for the first time while water's coming through your ceiling.

So today's the day you find out, with zero water actually leaking, and me standing right there.

The plan

We're going to do this in three rounds, and everyone does all three:

  1. Main shutoff. Find it, shut it off, confirm the water's off somewhere in the house (run a tap, it should sputter and quit), turn it back on.
  2. A sink shutoff. Under the kitchen or bathroom sink, the little oval handles. Off, confirm, on.
  3. A toilet shutoff. Same idea, down by the floor behind the tank. Off, flush to confirm the tank doesn't refill, on.

That's it. That's the whole lesson. You're not fixing anything. You're just proving to your own hands that you can do this.

The one thing I need you to be careful about

When you're turning these back on, don't crank them. This is the part people mess up, and I say that with total authority because I'm the one who messed it up.

I overtightened a supply line under my bathroom sink once. Not the shutoff valve itself, the little connector nut on the line running up to the faucet. In my head, tighter was safer. More tight equals more sealed, right? Wrong. I cracked the plastic nut clean through, and I didn't even know it until I heard dripping and opened the cabinet to a small swimming pool.

Hand-tight, plus a nudge with the wrench if it needs it. That's the whole game. If you're really cranking on something to get it to seal, you've usually gone too far, not too little. Same thing applies to shutoff valves themselves. Off is off. You don't need to muscle it another quarter turn once it stops.

What you'll notice

Ball valves (the ones with the lever handle) are usually quick, quarter-turn, obvious when they're off. Gate valves (the round wheel handles) take more turns and don't always give you a clean "done" feeling. That's normal. Don't force the last bit if it's resisting hard, just get it snug and confirm with a tap.

If a valve won't budge at all, don't fight it today. Tell me. Some valves haven't been touched in years and need a little penetrating oil and patience, not a bigger person yanking on them. We'll deal with that one-on-one.

My actual opinion here

I think it's a little nuts that nobody tells new homeowners any of this on closing day. You get a stack of papers and a garage door opener and that's about it. Turning off your own water should be day-one knowledge, same as knowing where the bathroom is. So we're fixing that gap today, hands-on, no exceptions.
