Basic Home Repair for New Homeowners

Meets Thursdays · 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM · on location Fall 2026 · registration open Free to audit
This class runs in the Fall 2026 session. Registration is open now; lessons, materials, and the class discussion board are posted before it begins.

You just bought a house. Congrats. Now the toilet's running all night and you don't know where the water shutoff is. Been there.

This class is for first-time homeowners who feel lost the second they open the toolbox. We keep it hands-on. I demo something real quick, then you do it, because that's the only way this stuff sticks. We'll patch drywall, fix a running toilet, stop a dripping faucet, and find your water main so you're not standing in a wet garage in your socks like I was.

You'll leave knowing the cheap fixes cold and knowing when to just call a pro. No shame in that. You got this.

What you'll learn

  • Assemble a basic toolbox on a budget
  • Shut off water at the main and locally
  • Diagnose and fix common toilet and faucet problems
  • Patch small and large drywall holes cleanly
  • Recognize when to call a professional instead

Lessons

  1. Where to Start When You Feel Lost

Getting your bearings, your first tools, and the one thing every new homeowner should find on day one.

  2. Turning Water Off Without Panicking

Every shutoff in your house, when to use it, and how to stay calm in a wet garage.

  3. The Running Toilet

The repair that started all of this, and the $9 part that makes you feel like a genius.

  4. Faucets, Supply Lines, and Sinks

Stopping drips and connecting things without cracking a nut or flooding the cabinet.

  5. Patching Drywall

The one where patience beats skill and touching the mud too soon ruins everything.

  6. Doors, Small Wins, and Knowing Your Limits

Quick fixes that make a house feel like yours, plus the honest talk about what to hand off.

Class discussion

The class discussion board opens when the class begins this fall. Auditors and enrolled students ask questions and share work here once the session starts.
