Basic car maintenance, under the hood since 2003

  • Police officer who taught himself car repair the cheap way, out of necessity

Community instructor · a local volunteer, materials reviewed by the program

Mark learned cars the cheap way, in a cold apartment parking lot with a dead Corolla and a flashlight in his teeth, because the choice was figure it out or pay a shop he couldn't afford. Being a cop feeds the rest of it. He's pulled up on too many people stranded at 11pm with no coat and a tow an hour out, and most of those calls were avoidable. He likes that car stuff is honest, either the battery holds a charge or it doesn't. He teaches hands-on, blunt but not mean, and he's honest about what he doesn't touch. Transmissions are a shop job.
