Winter birding guide

Orem, UT Doing this since 2022 1 class
  • Birding most weeks for four winters
  • Reads birds by their shape and movement, a habit from her years dancing

Community instructor · a local volunteer, materials reviewed by the program

Kathleen came to birding sideways, through walks by the lake with her husband Alan on doctor's orders. One morning there were two hundred birds out on the ice and nobody could tell her what they were, and that bothered her enough to get a field guide from the library and a pair of binoculars on sale. She's been out most weeks for four winters now. She'll tell you straight that she's no expert, that she's hopeless with little brown sparrows, and that she can't identify much by call. What she can do is read a bird by its shape and movement, a habit left over from her years dancing, and she likes teaching people to see it themselves.
