Fixing a Loop That Came Out Wrong

Okay. I feel like this is the lesson people actually need most, and nobody asks for it directly, they just show up with a bag of sad little loops and a look on their face.

So let's talk about it straight on.

First, how to tell it's actually wrong

Not every "off" loop needs fixing. Some are just yours, in the way a handwriting sample is yours, a little lean or a little wide, and that's fine. Here's what I'm actually looking for when I decide a loop needs to come apart and start over:

  • The gap. If you can see a slice of daylight between the wire end and the loop, where it's supposed to close, that's a real problem. Things fall off. A pendant with a gapped loop is a pendant that ends up on the floor of your car.
  • The overlap crush. The opposite problem, where the wire end has been wrapped so tight it's crossed itself and made a weird lump instead of a clean circle.
  • The off-center loop. Where the loop isn't sitting centered over the stem, so it hangs crooked. This one's mostly cosmetic and I'll be honest, I let a lot of these go. A slightly crooked loop on an earring reads as handmade, not broken.
  • The flat spot. Where instead of a circle you've got something closer to a teardrop or an egg, because the pliers slipped or you didn't rotate your wrist all the way through the bend.

If you're looking at your loop and you're not sure which category it's in, that's fine, bring it next time and I'll look at it with you. I'd genuinely rather you ask than quietly decide the whole piece is a failure and shove it in a drawer.

The actual fix

Here's the good news. Wire is forgiving up to a point, and copper especially so, which is one more reason I have you all starting on copper instead of silver. You can undo a loop and try again more times than you'd think before the wire gets too work-hardened and snaps on you.

  1. Straighten the stem first. Before you touch the loop itself, gently unbend whatever's happened to the straight part of the wire below it. Use your fingers, not pliers, for this part if you can, less marking that way.
  2. Unwind or open the loop. If it's a wrapped loop, use your chain-nose pliers to grip the loop and slowly unwind the wraps below it, the same direction they went on, just backwards. Don't rush this. If it's a simple loop, just open it back out with the pliers the way you'd open a jump ring.
  3. Check your wire length. This is usually where the actual problem lives, honestly. Most bad loops come from not leaving enough wire to work with, not from bad technique. If you're short, you may just need to accept this attempt is done and start fresh with more wire. That's fine. That's not a failure, that's data.
  4. Re-bend from the same spot on your pliers. I talked about this in the simple loop lesson, but it matters double here: use the same spot on your round-nose jaws every time so your loops come out a consistent size. If you grabbed the pliers somewhere different on the second try than the first, that's often why loop two doesn't match loop one.
  5. Rotate all the way through. The flat-spot problem almost always comes from stopping the rotation partway. Keep turning your wrist in one smooth motion until the wire meets itself. Don't do it in little stop-start bites, that's what makes the egg shape.

One caution here, and I mean this plainly: work-hardened wire gets brittle, and if you've unwound and rewound the same piece of wire three or four times, it can just snap on you, sometimes with a little flick of sharp end right toward your hand. Not dangerous like a power tool is dangerous, but I've scratched myself more than once this way. Keep your fingers a little back from where you're bending, and if a wire feels stiff and unwilling in a way it wasn't before, that's your sign to cut a fresh piece rather than force it again.

The opinion part

I don't love matched sets, I've said this before, and it's relevant here because I want to give you permission not to chase perfect symmetry between two loops on a pair of earrings. Close is good. Identical is not actually the goal, in my opinion. Two loops that are near enough but not twins look like a person made them. Which they did.

What I actually think about while I fix these

I had a woman at a craft fair once, this was a table I was sharing with my friend Sarah, pick up one of my pieces, turn it over in her hand, look right at the loop, and set it back down without saying a word. Didn't even make a face. Just put it down and moved to the next table.

I thought about that for three days. Not because she was mean, she wasn't, she didn't say anything unkind, she didn't say anything at all. But I knew exactly what she saw, because it was a slightly gapped loop I'd told myself was fine. It probably was fine, for a five dollar craft fair earring. But I knew the second she turned it over what she'd found, because I'd found it too and talked myself out of fixing it.

So now I check the loop before it goes out the door, every time, even on the pieces I'm not sure anyone will ever turn over.
