What we're doing here and what you'll leave with
Okay. So welcome in.
I want to tell you upfront what this class is and what it isn't, because I think people show up to a beginner welding class with a picture in their head that isn't quite right.
This isn't a class where you watch me weld for six weeks and take notes. And it's not a class where I hand you a torch on day one and just... hope. It's somewhere in between. You're going to run beads. You're going to burn through some scrap metal that isn't good for anything else. And by the end you'll have actually welded something, with your own hands, that holds together.
That last part matters to me. I feel like a lot of people leave classes like this having watched a lot and done a little, and then they get home and they're just as intimidated by the machine as they were before. I don't want that for you. I want you to leave here having done it enough times that the fear part is mostly gone, even if the skill part is still rough.
A little about where I'm coming from
I should say plainly, I'm not a certified welder. I didn't come up in a shop. I picked this up a few years ago, after I retired and moved out here, because I got a 3D printer and started making brackets and jigs for stuff around the house, and then I kept running into projects where plastic just wasn't going to cut it. So I bought a cheap MIG welder off a guy, watched an embarrassing number of YouTube videos, and burned through a lot of scrap before anything I made actually held.
I bring this up because I think it's actually useful for you. I remember exactly which parts were confusing, because it wasn't that long ago for me. Somebody who's been doing this thirty years sometimes forgets how scary the arc looks the first time you pull the trigger. I haven't forgotten. It was maybe three years ago that it looked scary to me too.
My first bead ever looked like a caterpillar that got run over. I still have it sitting on my workbench at home. I'll bring it in at some point so you can see it. If mine looked like that and I can do this now, you're going to be fine.
What we're actually covering
Over the next several lessons we're going to work through:
- Getting comfortable with the machine itself — what all the knobs and settings actually do, and why
- Setup, which is the part almost nobody takes seriously and almost everybody should
- Running your first beads on scrap, flat and horizontal
- Basic joints — tacking two pieces together, then a full joint
- A small finished project at the end, something simple, so you leave with an actual object
We're not doing aluminum in this class. That needs a spool gun and different technique and honestly, that's beyond me. We're sticking with mild steel, which is the right place to start anyway.
We're also not doing overhead or vertical welding. That's gravity fighting you the whole time and even I still get ugly results up there. Flat and horizontal is plenty for a first class.
The one opinion I want you to hear now
Here's the thing I want to plant in your head before we even touch the machine: setup is where beginners fail, not the welding itself. Not the hand movement, not the nerve. If your ground clamp has a good solid connection and your settings actually match the thickness of metal you're working with, the bead almost runs itself. Most people rush past setup because it feels like the boring part before the real part, and then they blame their hands when it goes wrong. It's usually not your hands. We're going to spend real time on setup because of this.
A quick story, because I think it matters
The first time I got a bead that actually looked like the videos — you know, the stacked dimes, that little ripple pattern that means you did it right — I hollered for my wife Jan to come out to the garage and look at it. She came out, looked at it, said it looked nice. I was thrilled the rest of the day. Genuinely. I tell you that because that feeling is coming for you too, and it's a good one, and I want you to get there.
A real caution, not a scary one
Welding fumes are not something to be casual about. We'll have ventilation running every session and I'll show you what good airflow actually looks like versus what people think is good airflow. I learned this one from my wife more than from any video, and she was right to push me on it.

Just show up ready to stand at a bench for a couple hours. Wear cotton, not synthetic, and closed shoes. Nothing else to prepare. I'll have the machines set up and scrap ready to go.
