Gloves, jacket, boots, and what the arc does to skin and eyes
Alright. So we've talked helmets already, and I know some of you are itching to just get to the welding part. I feel like everybody wants to skip past the gear talk. But I'm going to slow us down here for one more lesson because this is the stuff that actually keeps you from getting hurt, and I'd rather bore you for fifteen minutes than have you learn this the hard way.
Let's start with what the arc actually does, because once you understand that, the gear makes sense instead of feeling like a bunch of rules somebody made up.
What's actually happening in that arc
A MIG arc is putting out serious UV radiation. Not "stand in the sun too long" UV. More like a sunburn machine pointed straight at you from eighteen inches away. That's what "arc flash" or "arc eye" is — it's basically a sunburn on your actual eyeball, and it happens fast. You don't feel it while it's happening either, which is the cruel part. It shows up hours later, feels like sand in your eyes, and it's miserable. I haven't gotten it, knock on wood, but I've read enough accounts to take it seriously.
It's also throwing off UV onto your skin the same way. So a guy in a t-shirt welding for twenty minutes can get a sunburn on his forearms in a shop, in the winter, with no sun anywhere involved. People don't expect that part.
Then on top of the light, you've got sparks and hot metal spatter flying off, and you've got the metal itself, which stays hot a lot longer than it looks like it should.
So the gear isn't about looking the part. Every piece of it is answering one of those three problems.
The actual gear list
Gloves. Get real welding gloves, leather, not your yard-work gloves. They need to handle heat and they need enough dexterity that you can still feel the gun trigger properly. I feel like people either buy gloves so thick they can't feel anything, or they try to cheap out with garden gloves that'll straight up melt. Get the middle ground. A decent pair runs you maybe twenty, twenty-five bucks.
Jacket or long sleeves, cotton or leather, not synthetic. This one people skip because it's summer and nobody wants a jacket in a hot garage. But polyester and a lot of blends will melt onto your skin if a spark lands on it, and cotton just... doesn't. A canvas or denim work jacket is fine for a beginner. You don't need the fancy leather welding jacket to start. Long sleeves, full stop, no bare arms near the arc.
Boots, closed-toe, ideally leather, not mesh sneakers. Sparks land in shoes more than you'd think, they roll, they find the gap at your ankle. Leather boots mostly just make the spark bounce off or burn out before it does anything. Mesh or canvas shoes, the spark can sit there and start smoldering and you won't notice for a second.
And your eyes, obviously, the helmet — we already covered that one, so I won't relitigate it. Auto-darkening, that's my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
One thing people forget: safety glasses under the helmet, or at least when you flip it up to check your work or grind something. Slag pops off welds when it cools and it pops in random directions. I got a fleck in my eyebrow once doing exactly that, checking a bead too soon with the helmet up. Wasn't serious, just startled me and left a little mark for a few days.
Setting up so you're not fighting your gear
Before you even strike an arc, walk your own setup:
- Long sleeves on, buttoned or rolled down, nothing loose hanging that could catch a spark or dangle into the arc.
- Gloves on before you pick up the gun, not after.
- Boots, not sandals, not the mesh trainers you wore to the store. I don't care how hot the garage is in July.
- Hair tied back or under something if it's long. Sparks don't care about hair.
- Check your space around you, not just yourself. Sparks travel further than you expect, and they'll find sawdust, cardboard, an oily rag, whatever's sitting nearby. Clear a real radius.
That last one's about the shop as much as the person. My own space is a corner of the garage now, not because I planned it well but because Jan made me move the welder out of the main bay after I came in smelling like burnt metal three days running. She was right, I'll admit it, ventilation matters and so does what's sitting around you when sparks start flying.
Speaking of the corner setup — I built a little welding cart out of scrap and some casters a while back, mostly so I could roll the whole rig to wherever the ventilation was better instead of dragging cables across the garage floor every time. Genuinely didn't expect it to roll straight, first attempt, but it does. I'll bring pictures sometime if anybody wants to see it. Point is, thinking about where you're set up, not just what you're wearing, is part of the gear conversation. A good spot with airflow and nothing flammable nearby does half the work before you even glove up.
The honest caution
I'm not going to lawyer this up for you, but I will say it plain: the fumes are real, the arc will burn eyes and skin you don't cover, and hot metal stays hot way longer than it looks. None of that is meant to scare you off. It's meant to make the gear feel less optional. Once you've got the right stuff on, you genuinely stop thinking about it and can focus on the weld, which is the whole goal.
