Why the Dry Air Here Keeps Knocking You Out of Tune
You tuned your uke last time. Good. Now I have to tell you something that's going to feel unfair.
It's not going to stay tuned. Not the way it would somewhere else.
Utah Valley air is dry. Really dry. We're up around 4,600 feet with almost no humidity most of the year, and wood does not like that. A ukulele is wood and glue and string tension, all of it balanced against itself, and dry air pulls moisture out of the wood. The wood shrinks a little. The tension shifts. Your strings drift.
This isn't a you problem. I want to say that clearly because most beginners assume it's their fingers, their ear, something they're doing wrong. It's not. It's the climate.
The porch story
I played on my back porch one August evening, sounded fine when I started, and by ten minutes in the whole thing had gone sour. I checked the tuner assuming I'd bumped a peg or something. Nope. Every string had drifted flat. I tuned it again, kept playing, and ten minutes later, same thing.
Where I used to live, before American Fork, I could tune once and play for an hour without thinking about it again. Here that's not how it works. The dry air had loosened everything up, gently and constantly, the whole time I was playing. I wasn't losing my mind. The instrument was just doing what wood does out here.
That was the day I stopped treating tuning as a one-time thing before practice and started treating it as something I check constantly. Now it's just part of how I play, the same way you'd check a recipe rises differently up here because of the elevation. Different environment, different behavior. You adjust for it, you don't fight it.
What this means for you, practically
Check your tuning every time you sit down, no exceptions. I said this in the tuning lesson already and I'm not backing off it. An out-of-tune uke will make you think you played a chord wrong when you didn't. That's a process problem, not a talent problem, and I'd rather you fix the instrument than doubt yourself.
If you're practicing longer than fifteen minutes, check again partway through. You don't need to retune every string every time, just glance at the tuner. If a string's drifted, fix it before you keep going. Playing on a drifted string trains your ear on the wrong pitch, and that's worse than not practicing at all.
Keep your uke away from heat vents and direct sun. Dry air is one problem. Dry air plus a heater blowing right on it is worse. If you've got yours near a window or a vent this winter, move it. Same goes for summer if it's sitting in a hot car for a Costco run — don't leave it in there.
A cheap humidifier packet inside the case helps. You don't need anything fancy, just something that keeps a little moisture near the instrument when it's not being played. This matters more for a nicer uke than the $40 starter one, but even the cheap one will hold its tuning a little longer for it.
Notice which strings drift most. For most people it's the G and the E, the outer strings. If you find yourself always fixing the same one or two, that's normal, not a defect.
The part that actually helps you learn
Here's the thing I didn't expect when I started dealing with this. Checking tuning constantly made me faster at tuning. I stopped fumbling with the clip-on and started doing it without thinking, which is exactly the kind of small, boring repetition that builds real skill. The dry air, annoying as it is, accidentally gave me more reps at a skill I needed anyway.
So don't think of the retuning as an interruption to practice. It is practice. Every time you check and adjust, you're training your ear a little, even if you don't notice it happening.
Before next time
Tune before you start, and if you practice more than ten or fifteen minutes, check it again partway through without waiting for it to sound obviously wrong. You're building the habit now so it's automatic later.
