Welcome to Intro to Woodworking - class starts May 4
Hey everyone, Andy here. Glad you signed up. Week 1 we're just measuring and cutting the shelf sides, nothing fancy, but I'll show you the dry fit trick I wish I'd known when I built my first shelf back in 2011 (a quarter inch off, hung it anyway for four years). Introduce yourself below and tell me why you signed up. Curious what you're all hoping to build once the shelf's done.

Signed up mainly to force myself to finally finish the built-ins in the garage instead of starting a fourth project I abandon in July. We'll see how that goes... Also mildly annoyed, my brad nailer walked off to Stephen's garage sometime last winter and I still don't have it back. if the supply list assumes everyone's got their own tools, that's gonna be a problem for me specifically lol
Before class starts I'd recommend everyone watch a video or two on pocket hole joinery vs just butt joints and glue... theres a guy on youtube (wont link it, just search "pocket hole vs dado shelf") who breaks down the weight tolerance difference and it's way more than people think!
Reason I bring it up, a coworker at the plant asked me to help him build shelving for his garage last month and he wanted to just glue and nail everything, and it sagged within like two weeks under a bunch of paint cans. totally avoidable if you know the failure points going in.
Also heads up if anyone's ordering wood glue or clamps off amazon before the 4th, ship times have been slow lately, prob the weather backing up trucks or something. get that stuff early you're not scrambling the night before.
Efficiency tip for whenever you do get to the shelf project... premeasure and cut all you're pieces in one sitting before you
not from american fork, downtown provo apartment guy here. gonna be honest the "small shelf" framing kinda worries me, ive watched like 4 hours of joinery videos at 2am thsi week and everyone always says shelves are the easy starter project then shows you a router table and six clamps. idk if its beginner friendly or what everyone says to make you sign up. we'll see may 4 i guess
So i already have three raised beds failing on me for the third season straight and now im supposed to be excited about building a shelf with pine that's gonna warp in my garage in a year anyway... cant tell if im annoyed at the wood or at myself for not testing moisture content first like I keep telling everyone else to do Thanks!
Mathew from Ridgeline... did they say what tools we need to bring or is that a wait-and-see thing. every class I've done like this either says "just show up" and then half the room is scrambling, or they way overpack the supply list. my guess is bring your own clamps at minimum, the shop ones never seem to stretch far enough. anyway not trying to hijack, just curious if anyone's confiremd that with the instructor yet. Daniel your raised bed comment hit different lol... same eenrgy as me not checking my hillside drainage before starting the root cellar 🙈 shelf turned out fine though, way past that stress now
Well the six weeks flew by..... shelf turned out solid, no pocket holes needed after all honestly. missed this one already, hoping for a fall session. Thanks!
Cade, glad it held up without the pocket holes, that's a good feeling. It really did fly by, May 4 to June 8 went fast on my end too! Miss having you all show your progress on Zoom each Monday. Fingers crossed on fall.
