Baseplate, Housing, Needle, And Direction-Of-Travel
Okay. We've spent a bunch of lessons on the map side of things. Ridges, drainages, handrails, orienting by feel. Good. That's the foundation and I meant it when I said it matters more than the compass does.
But now we need to actually talk about the compass itself. The parts. What they do. Because if you don't know what you're holding, none of the bearing stuff later is going to make sense. It'll just be steps you memorized.
The four parts you need to know
Grab your compass. The cheap baseplate one, ideally, the kind I told you to buy a few lessons back.
The baseplate. That's the clear rectangular piece the whole thing sits on. Simple. It's a ruler with a compass bolted to it. The edges are straight so you can lay it against a map and use it like a straightedge, which we'll do later.
The housing. That's the round dial that turns, the one with the numbers printed around the outside, 0 to 360. Some people call it the bezel. I call it the Housing because that's what it said in the scouting handbook I learned from, and old habits stick. Inside the housing is a clear capsule filled with liquid, and floating in that liquid is the important part.
The needle. Red end points north. Magnetic north, not true north, which is a whole thing we'll get into with declination, but for right now just know the red end wants to point at magnetic north and it's very insistent about it. That's Low Key the whole magic trick of the compass. A little magnetized sliver that always points the same direction no matter how you turn the housing around it.
The direction-of-travel arrow. This is the arrow printed on the baseplate itself, usually at the front edge, pointing away from you. This is the one people forget about. It's not the needle. It's not on the housing. It's fixed to the baseplate and it tells you which way you're actually going to walk once you've got everything lined up.
Four parts. Baseplate, housing, needle, direction-of-travel arrow. Say them out loud a couple times. You'll use these words a lot for the rest of the class.
Try this at your kitchen table
Set the compass flat on a table. A wood or laminate table, not near a metal filing cabinet or a big steel water bottle. I'll explain that caution in a second.
Watch the needle settle. It'll wobble a bit then point one direction and stay there. That's magnetic north, wherever your kitchen happens to be pointed relative to it.
Now turn the housing, just the dial, without moving the baseplate. Watch how the needle doesn't care. It just sits there pointing the same direction no matter what number you spin under it. That disconnect, the housing spins freely but the needle stays locked on north, is the entire mechanism. Once that clicks, everything else in this class is just procedure.
Now pick up the compass and rotate the whole thing, baseplate and all, in your hand. Now the needle moves relative to the housing, because you're the one rotating this time, not the housing alone. Play with this for a few minutes. Turn it, watch it settle, turn it again. There's no wrong way to do this exercise. You're just building a feel for which part moves independently of which.
About that metal caution
Keep your compass away from steel water bottles, phones, keys, belt buckles, that kind of thing, while you're using it. Not being dramatic about it, it's just physics. Any nearby chunk of metal or magnet will pull the needle off true, and it won't look wrong, it'll just look like a normal reading. That's the dangerous part. It doesn't wobble and warn you. It just quietly lies.
I found this out the hard way trying to teach my sibling Amber a bearing on a hike years ago. She had the compass out flat, doing everything right, and she happened to be holding it about six inches from a big steel water bottle clipped to her pack strap. Needle was spinning around like it had opinions. Took me a solid ten minutes standing there going "that's weird" before I clocked the bottle. Nobody tells you that part. I sure didn't know it until I watched it happen.
So: compass away from your body's metal, away from your phone, on a flat surface with nothing steel underneath. At home that means off to the side of your keys, not on top of your phone case with the little magnet clasp. Up the canyon it means unclipping that water bottle and setting it a few feet away before you take a real reading.
One opinion, restated
I've said this before but it's worth saying again here specifically. The cheap baseplate compass is the right tool for this stage. You don't need a sighting mirror or a fancy declination-adjustable housing yet. You need to understand what these four parts do with your hands, and a $12 compass teaches that exactly as well as a $60 one. Better, honestly, because there's less to fumble while you're still building the feel for it.

Do the kitchen table exercise a couple times this week, just turning the housing, watching the needle stay put, then rotating the whole compass and watching the needle move relative to the housing.
