Adjusting The Compass So It Does The Math
Okay. Last lesson we said the number out loud every time. That's the habit. This lesson is the actual mechanics of getting your compass to do the correction for you, so you're not doing math in your head at 6,800 feet with cold fingers.
Most baseplate compasses have a rotating bezel with a little screw or two tucked inside the housing, near the orienting arrow. That screw adjusts the declination offset permanently, so once it's set, the compass just quietly handles it every time you take a bearing. You stop adding or subtracting numbers in your head. The Compass does the math. That's the whole point of this lesson.
Not every compass has this feature. The really cheap ones don't, and that's fine, you'll just do it manually, which we'll cover too. But if yours has that little adjustable orienting arrow, this is worth ten minutes of your evening.
Step by step, at your kitchen table
- Find your declination number. You already did this two lessons ago, off your map's margin. Write it down again if you need to. Mine's a few degrees east, yours might be different depending where you are.
- Find the adjustment screw. Usually a tiny flathead, sometimes needs the little key that came with the compass, sometimes just a fingernail or a pocketknife tip. Look right at the base of the orienting arrow, under the bezel.
- Turn the bezel until the correction lines up. Most compasses have small declination marks etched inside the housing, little hash lines you align the orienting arrow to. Turn it east or west by your number. If you're east declination, you're generally turning it so the orienting arrow sits that many degrees to the... honestly, just check your specific compass's manual for which direction, because this is the one spot where brands differ and I don't want to give you wrong directions and have you 40 degrees off the way I was.
- Tighten it back down and test it. Take a bearing on something obvious in your house, a door frame, a corner, whatever. Then check the number feels right against what you'd expect walking that direction outside.
That first part of my history, by the way, taking a bearing without adjusting for declination, is exactly how I ended up on the wrong side of a hill instead of at my car. I was maybe 40 degrees off. It doesn't sound like much until you're the one standing there wondering why the ridge looks wrong.
If your compass can't be adjusted
Plenty of the cheap baseplate ones don't have this feature, and that's genuinely fine. You just do it the manual way. Take your raw bearing, then add or subtract the declination number by hand, out loud, every single time, like we talked about last lesson. It's one more step, but it's not hard, it's just a habit you have to actually keep.
This is part of why I like the cheap baseplate compass for beginners, honestly. Fewer parts to fumble. Some of the fancier sighting mirror compasses have declination adjustment too, but they've also got more knobs and hinges and ways to get confused, and if you're new, confusion is the enemy, not the missing feature.
A small aside about kids and maps
I took my daughter Elizabeth on an easy flat trail once with a paper map, just to see what she'd do with it. She wanted to hold it. Within about four minutes she'd folded the whole thing into a wad and announced we were "at the mountain." She wasn't wrong, actually. We were, technically, at a mountain. Just not the spot on the map she was pointing at.
I bring that up because it's a decent reminder that the map is a tool for understanding where you are, not a sacred object. You're going to fold it wrong, get it damp, mark it up, lose track of which panel you're on. That's fine. It's a working document, not a museum piece. Elizabeth had the right instinct even if the execution needs a few more years.
A word of caution here
If you're using a knife or screwdriver tip to adjust that tiny screw, do it at a table with good light, not standing up in the garage rushing before a hike. It's a small screw and a small tool and it's easy to slip. Nothing dramatic happens if you do, but you'll strip the screw or scratch the housing, and then you've got a compass that won't hold its adjustment. Take your time with it once, and you won't have to mess with it again for years.
