Reading an elevation profile together
Last time we talked about why mileage lies and gain tells the truth. Today we're actually going to look at one. Pull up a trail you're curious about, real one, and let's read it together.
Most trail apps and websites will show you a little chart under the map. Distance along the bottom, elevation along the side. That's your profile. It looks like a heart monitor readout, and it's telling you the same kind of thing: is this calm or is this an event.
Start with the shape, not the number
Don't just look at total gain. Look at where the gain happens.
A profile that climbs steadily the whole way is one kind of hike. Steady, predictable, you settle into a pace and stay there. A profile that's flat for two miles and then shoots up like a wall for the last mile is a completely different hike, even if the total gain is identical. That last mile is going to flatten you if you don't know it's coming.
I look for three things every time:
- Total gain. The big number, good for comparing hikes at a glance.
- Gain per mile. Total gain divided by total mileage. This is the number I actually trust. Under 300 feet a mile, easy day. Getting up toward 700-800 feet a mile, that's a real climb, and you should know that before you're standing at the trailhead.
- Where the steep parts fall. Front-loaded, back-loaded, or spread even. This tells you when you'll be working hardest, which matters for pacing and for water.
Do the math at your kitchen table
You don't need special software for this. Trail mileage and total gain are usually both listed right on the page. Divide gain by mileage, that's your per-mile number. Takes ten seconds and it'll save you from the four-mile hike that feels like ten, which I promise you is a real thing, because I've done it.
Write the number down before you leave the house. Not "I'll remember," write it. I keep mine in the same spreadsheet where I log water and turnaround times. Your mileage may vary on how organized you want to get, but at minimum, jot it on the back of your paper map.
Use it to set your start time
This is where the profile stops being trivia and starts being a plan.
Once you know roughly how much climbing you're doing, and roughly how you move on hills (we'll get to training on real inclines in a later lesson), you can estimate how long you'll be out. Then work backward from when you need to be off any exposed ridge. In summer around here, that's early afternoon, because the canyons build thunderstorms almost on a schedule from July into September. If your profile shows a long exposed stretch near the top, that ridge time isn't optional information, it's the thing that sets your alarm clock.
I got sloppy about this once. Hit the trailhead at 11 in the morning for a mountain hike, which is late, and I knew it was late when I did it. Spent the whole hike watching the sky instead of the wildflowers, which is not a relaxing way to hike. Nothing bad happened that day, but I promised myself I wouldn't start a mountain hike late again, and I mostly keep that promise. The profile is what would have told me, ahead of time, that I didn't have room for a late start. I just didn't look closely enough.
A caution on trusting the chart too much
Elevation profiles are generally reliable but they're not gospel. Some trail sites smooth the data, so a chart that looks gentle can still have a genuinely steep, loose, or rocky short section that doesn't show up as a big spike. If a trail description mentions scrambling, switchbacks, or exposure, take that seriously even if the profile line looks tame. The chart is a starting point, not the whole picture.
What to actually do with this before your next hike
- Pick your trail.
- Find total mileage and total gain.
- Divide gain by mileage. Write the number down.
- Look at the shape of the profile. Front-loaded, back-loaded, or even.
- Note where any exposed ridge or summit section falls on that profile, and set your start time working backward from early afternoon.
That's it. Five steps, ten minutes, and you know a lot more about your day than the word "four miles" was ever going to tell you.
