Tire levers, not screwdrivers, and why that matters

Okay. Last time we talked about which tools are worth owning. This time I want to slow down on one item specifically, because it's low key the most common mistake I see, and it costs people money for no reason.

Tire levers. Get them. They're like three bucks for a set of three plastic ones. There's no excuse.

Here's the thing... everybody's got a flathead screwdriver sitting in a kitchen drawer, and it looks like it'll do the same job. It will not do the same job. A screwdriver has an edge and a point, and when you're prying a tire bead off a rim, that edge is going to bite into either the rim or the tube, and usually both. I've seen rims with permanent scars from screwdriver prying. Once that lip gets dinged up enough, your tire won't seat right ever again and now you're buying a new rim, which is a whole different afternoon than the one you planned.

Tire levers are curved and blunt on purpose. They're built to hook the bead and roll it over the rim edge without gouging anything. That's the whole design. Cheap plastic ones work fine for basically everything you'll do in this class.

How to actually use them

Let go of some air first if there's any left in the tube. Don't fight a fully inflated tire.

Find the valve stem, and start opposite it, on the far side of the wheel. Slide one lever under the bead, right next to a spoke, and lever it up and over the rim edge. Most levers have a hook on the other end, so once that first bit of bead is up, you clip the hook onto a spoke to hold your progress. That frees up your hands.

Take the second lever, slide it under the bead a few inches over from the first one, and lever that section up too. Now, instead of doing that all the way around one spoke-width at a time, you can usually just slide that second lever around the rim, walking the rest of the bead off in one long motion. That's the part that feels like a trick once you get it. Most people wrestle the whole tire off inch by inch the first time and then feel dumb once someone shows them the slide move. You're not dumb, nobody shows you until somebody shows you.

That'll get you most of the way there. Getting the tire back on is basically the reverse, and honestly the last few inches of seating the bead back on is the annoying part for almost everyone, myself included some days.

The mistake that actually gets people

This is the one I want you to really hear. When you're putting the tube back in, or when you're pushing that last stretch of bead back onto the rim, it's really easy to pinch the tube between the tire and the rim without noticing. You air it up, feels fine, you walk away satisfied with yourself, and ten seconds later it's flat again and you have no idea why.

I know this one personally. First flat I ever fixed for my kids, I did exactly that. Pinched the tube with the lever, didn't check, aired it up, felt like a hero. Watched it go flat again right there in the driveway about thirty seconds later. Jackson thought that was the funniest thing he'd seen all week, and he was right to laugh, honestly, because I'd just told him I knew what I was doing.

So here's the fix for that mistake: before you fully inflate, put a little air in, just enough to give the tube some shape, and run your fingers around the whole tire on both sides checking that nothing's tucked under the bead wrong. Takes fifteen seconds. Saves you the driveway restart.

A quick story on why this stuff matters beyond your own bike

A neighbor two streets over texted me one night, nine o'clock, about a squeak on their kid's bike. I walked over with a bottle of chain lube, it was a four-minute fix, dry chain, nothing dramatic. But while I was there they mentioned the same bike's tire had gone flat twice that month and they'd just been pumping it back up each time instead of finding out why. Sure enough, somebody at a shop or a garage had levered that tube in crooked at some point and it'd been slow-leaking against a pinch the whole time. Ten minute fix once we knew where to look. That's kind of the whole class in one story. Most of this stuff isn't hard, it's just nobody ever showed you the small thing that matters.
