The barrel adjuster and why one side grabs
Okay. Pads are clean, rim's clean, or your disc pads are clean. That was the last lesson. Now we deal with the thing that actually drives people crazy: one brake pad hits the rim before the other one does. You squeeze the lever, one side grabs first, the wheel pulls a little, and it feels like something's broken.
Nothing's broken. Low key this is the most common complaint I get from neighbors, and it's a five-minute fix almost every time.
What's actually happening
Your brake has two pads, one on each side of the rim (or the rotor, if you're on disc). They're supposed to hit at the same time, evenly. When one side grabs first, it's almost always one of two things:
- The cable's stretched or was never quite adjusted right to begin with
- The spring tension on one arm is stronger than the other, so it's pulling that pad closer to the rim at rest
Cars have their own version of this, brakes pulling to one side, and the fix there is way more involved. Bikes are simpler. That's kind of the whole appeal for me.
Find the barrel adjuster
On a rim brake, look at where the cable goes into the brake lever on the handlebar, or where it enters the brake caliper itself. You're looking for a little knurled cylinder the cable passes through, usually threaded, sometimes with a lock nut on it. That's the barrel adjuster. On mechanical disc brakes it's in a similar spot, either at the lever or where the cable meets the caliper.
Turn it counterclockwise (unscrewing it, backing it out) and you're taking up cable slack, which brings the pads closer to the rim overall. Clockwise loosens things back up.
That adjuster is for overall cable tension, not for fixing a lopsided pull by itself. So here's the actual sequence.
Fixing the lopsided grab
Step 1: Loosen the barrel adjuster all the way in (clockwise), so you've got some slack to work with. This just gives you room to see what's going on without the pads already touching.
Step 2: Squeeze the lever slowly and watch the pads. Get your face down near the wheel, watch both sides at once if you can. See which pad touches the rim first.
Step 3: Find the spring tension screw. Most rim brakes (dual-pivot calipers, the kind on most road and hybrid bikes) have a small screw on each arm, right where the arm pivots. That screw adjusts spring tension on that side. Turning it in increases tension, which pulls that pad away from the rim. Turning it out reduces tension, letting that pad sit closer.
If the left pad's hitting first, you either tighten the tension screw on the left arm a quarter turn, or loosen the one on the right. I usually do small turns on whichever side is grabbing, quarter turn at a time, then squeeze the lever again and check.
Step 4: Once they're even, use the barrel adjuster to bring both pads to the right distance from the rim. You want maybe a couple millimeters of gap on each side when the brake's not engaged, close enough that the lever doesn't need a big squeeze to work, far enough that the pads aren't rubbing constantly.
Step 5: Spin the wheel. Listen for rub. If you hear a faint tick-tick-tick that's just the rim seam passing the pad, that's normal, don't chase it. If it's a constant scrape, you're still off on tension or the adjuster's in too far.
For mechanical disc brakes the idea is similar but there's usually a fixed pad and a moving pad, and you're adjusting cable tension and the fixed pad's position separately. I won't get into the full weeds here, that's its own lesson, but the barrel adjuster still does the same basic job: takes up slack.
Why this matters more than people think
Jocelyn had this exact problem a while back, one side grabbing every time she braked coming down our street. I walked her through the whole thing, the tension screws, the barrel adjuster, watching the pads, all of it. She nodded along, seemed to get it.
Next time it happened, she just fixed it herself. Didn't ask me, didn't wait for me to have time. I found out after the fact when I noticed the tension screw had clearly been touched. I was quietly pleased about that for a couple days, not going to pretend otherwise. That's kind of the whole point of teaching this stuff. You want people not needing you anymore.
This is honestly how a lot of my "projects" start, too. Somebody sees you out in the garage messing with a bike and next thing you're doing a walkthrough on their kid's brakes. Guy two streets over texted me at 9pm once about a squeak, I walked over with a bottle of chain lube, fixed it in about four minutes, and left with a request to look at his kid's derailleur "sometime." That's basically every project I've got going right now, that's how it starts.
A caution here
Don't crank the tension screws hard trying to force an even pull. If a screw feels stuck or gritty, back off and check it rather than muscling it. Same rule as always: right tool, gentle first. Stripped tension screws are a pain to deal with and usually mean a trip to buy a whole new caliper arm, which is exactly the kind of expense this class is trying to help you skip.
