Knowing when it's good enough and when it's a shop job

Okay. You've been working spoke nipples a quarter turn at a time, checking against your zip-tie, and at some point you have to stop turning and decide if you're done. That's this lesson. Nobody teaches this part, honestly, and it's low key the most useful thing I can tell you.

What "good enough" actually looks like

Spin the wheel. Watch the zip-tie gap.

If the wobble is small enough that your brake pads don't rub anywhere in the rotation, you're done. That's the bar. Not "perfectly true," just "doesn't rub, doesn't feel sketchy under you."

A wheel with a tiny bit of side-to-side wander is normal. Even shop-trued wheels have a hair of it if you look close enough with a good stand. What you're chasing is a wheel that rides fine and doesn't eat your brake pads or make a rubbing sound every rotation. That's it. That'll get you most of the way there, and most of the way there is where 90 percent of home mechanics should be living.

Here's the thing… people get perfectionist about this because "true" sounds like a precise word, like there's a correct answer. There kind of is, if you're a wheel builder with a stand and a tension meter. You're not that today. You're a person with a zip-tie and a Saturday. Different job, different standard.

The checks, in order

  1. Spin it slow, watch the gap. Small variation, no rub against the pad. Good.
  2. Squeeze the brake lever partway and spin again. If the pad kisses the rim once or twice lightly and clears, that's livable. If it's dragging for a quarter of the rotation, you've got more work or you need to back the pad off slightly, which we covered a couple lessons back.
  3. Push the wheel side to side at the rim, hand on each side. Feel for looseness, not wobble, looseness. If it moves like it's got play in the hub, that's not a truing problem anymore. That's a bearing or axle problem, and that's a different conversation.
  4. Check spoke tension by feel. Squeeze pairs of spokes together around the wheel. They should feel roughly the same tension all the way around. If one spoke feels like a limp noodle compared to its neighbors, mark it. That's usually your culprit if the wobble keeps coming back.

When it's a shop job

I'll be straight with you on this one, because I don't want you burning your whole evening on something that's not fixable with a zip-tie and patience.

A wheel that won't true no matter what you do. If you're taking quarter turns and the wobble isn't improving, or it improves in one spot and gets worse somewhere else, you might have a bent rim, not just loose spokes. A rim with an actual dent or flat spot from hitting a curb or a pothole isn't something you fix by tightening things. That's a new wheel or a shop rebuild.

A broken or badly damaged spoke. One snapped spoke you can sometimes limp home on. More than one, or a spoke that's visibly bent at the nipple, means the wheel's structurally compromised and truing around it is just delaying the real fix.

Anything with play in the hub itself. That's bearings, and bearings are their own skill set. Not what we're doing today.

Building a wheel from scratch. I'll say this plainly because I want to be honest about where my own line is. I've laced a wheel from a bare hub exactly once. Took me a whole Saturday and it still wasn't great. Truing an existing wheel, sure, all day. Building one from nothing, that's shop territory for me too, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

The part where I wander off

I want to tell you about the time I almost lost a whole conversation because of this exact skill.

I was at the hardware store, and a guy asked me a pretty detailed question about brake pad compounds, resin versus metallic, which ones wear the rim more. Good question. I gave him a solid answer, walking him through it. Then somebody two aisles over mentioned a driveway resurfacing project and my brain just left. Ten minutes later I realized I'd wandered off mid-conversation with this poor guy still holding a brake pad, waiting for me to finish my thought.

I bring it up because "good enough" is a skill you build the same way I should build "finish the conversation." You have to decide where the stopping point is and actually stop there, instead of chasing perfect or getting distracted chasing something else entirely. With a wheel, the stopping point is clear: no rub, no play, tension feels even. Hit that, walk away. Don't keep fiddling with something that's already fine because it feels like there should be more to do.
