A word on hydraulic brakes and when to see the shop
Okay. We've done rim brakes, we've done mechanical disc. Cleaned pads, sorted the barrel adjuster, set alignment and tension. That covers most of what's out there on the bikes people actually ride to work or to school or up the trail.
But some of you have hydraulic disc brakes. And I want to talk about those honestly, because this is the one spot in the whole class where I'm going to tell you to stop and go to a shop instead of teaching you to do it yourself.
How to tell what you've got
Quick check first, since some of you still aren't sure. Look at the lever where it meets the brake cable or hose. If there's a visible cable, a little metal wire running down to the caliper, that's mechanical. You already know how to deal with that.
If instead there's a smooth rubber hose, no visible cable at all, running from the lever down to the caliper, that's hydraulic. It's a sealed system with fluid inside doing the work instead of a cable pulling tension. Feels different at the lever too, usually. Smoother, kind of self-adjusting. Mechanical brakes you can feel the cable stretch and loosen over time. Hydraulic ones stay consistent a lot longer, which is honestly the whole selling point of them.
What you can still do yourself
I don't want you to think hydraulic means hands off completely. Some of it's still yours.
Cleaning the pads and rotor, same as we talked about with mechanical disc. Isopropyl alcohol, clean rag, no touching the pad surface or rotor with bare greasy fingers afterward. That part doesn't change just because the brake is hydraulic.
Checking pad wear. Pull the wheel, look at the pads same as before, look for that same minimum thickness we talked about. If they're thin, you can usually order the right pad and swap them yourself. That's mechanical work, not hydraulic work. Popping a pin, sliding old pads out, sliding new ones in. That's low key just maintenance, no fluid involved.
Wiping the caliper down, keeping grease and chain lube away from it. Same caution as always. Anything oily that gets on a rotor or in the pad material, you're stuck either cleaning it out thoroughly or replacing the pad. Hydraulic pads are actually a little less forgiving about contamination than rim pads, in my experience, so be extra careful there.
Where I stop
Here's the thing. Bleeding a hydraulic system, that's where I bow out. That's opening up the system, pushing new fluid through, getting every air bubble out of the lines so the lever feels firm instead of spongy. It's fussy work. Different bike brands use different fluid, mineral oil versus DOT fluid, and if you mix those up you can actually damage the seals. It's not dangerous the way it sounds, nobody's getting hurt, but it's precise and I don't do it enough to teach it well. I've watched videos, I've read the manuals, and every time I think about doing my own I decide the twenty or thirty bucks a shop charges is worth it for something I'll do once every year or two.
So if your lever feels soft, spongy, like it's got more travel before it grabs than it used to, that's air in the line or fluid that needs replacing. That's a shop trip. Not because it's unsafe to try. Just because it's finicky enough that I'd rather send you somewhere with the right tools and the practice reps than have you guessing with brake fluid near your face and your good garage floor.
Same goes if a hose gets nicked or starts leaking anywhere. Don't ride it. Fluid loss means your brake will eventually just stop working, no warning grab, no squeak first, it just won't be there when you pull the lever. That one I take seriously. Walk the bike to the shop if you have to.
The kid on the BMX bike
I did a favor for a neighbor kid a while back, fixed up his bike, and while I had it apart I noticed how hard he rode. Jumps, curb drops, the whole thing kids do that makes parents wince. Nobody asked me to adjust anything beyond the basic fix. But I set his brakes a touch looser than I normally would, gave him a little more lever travel before full bite, because that's how BMX riders actually want it. Full grab, not gradual.
That's the piece I want you to take from all this brake stuff, honestly. It's not one setting for every bike. Somebody's commuter needs different feel than somebody's trail bike needs different feel than a kid doing tricks in a driveway. Once you understand what the adjuster's actually doing, you can tune it to how a person rides instead of just following a manual number.
And the bigger opinion underneath all of it, the one I'll say one more time before we move off brakes for good: most people's brakes are fine. They're dirty or they're out of alignment. New pads, new cables, a whole new brake set, that's usually money spent skipping the actual fix, which is just cleaning and adjusting what's already on the bike.

Go check which kind of brakes you've actually got, rim, mechanical, or hydraulic, and if it's hydraulic, just get familiar with how the lever feels when it's working right. That way you'll notice the day it starts feeling wrong.
