How coolant does its job in cold and heat
Okay. New module. We spent a lesson already on coolant itself, checking the level, what the color means, catching leaks by smell. Good. Now I want to back up one step and actually explain what the stuff is doing in there, because once you get this part, all the checking makes a lot more sense.
Here's the thing people get wrong. They think coolant's a winter thing. Antifreeze, right, keeps it from freezing. True, but that's half the job. In Utah, with the swings we get, this system is working hard both directions, all year, and that's exactly why it deserves more attention here than in a place with one boring season.
What coolant's actually doing
Your engine makes an enormous amount of heat burning fuel. Way more than you'd guess. Left alone, it'd cook itself in minutes. Coolant's job is to circulate through the engine block, pick up that heat, carry it to the radiator, and let the airflow moving past the radiator pull the heat back out. Then it goes around again. Over and over, the whole time the engine's running.
That's the summer job, basically. Keep the engine from overheating when it's 95 degrees out and you're idling on the point of the mountain in traffic with the AC blasting, which is about the worst-case scenario for a cooling system. Stop-and-go plus heat plus the AC compressor adding load. That's when a marginal cooling system shows its weakness.
The winter job is the one people know about: coolant's got antifreeze in it, usually ethylene glycol, mixed with water, and that mix has a much lower freezing point than plain water. If it were just water in there, a cold enough night would freeze it solid, and ice expanding inside an engine block will crack the block. That's a catastrophic, this-car-is-done kind of repair. Not a small thing.
So: same fluid, two jobs, opposite seasons. Carries heat away in July, refuses to freeze in January. That's why I said last time it matters more here than people think. We don't get one mild season and call it good. We get 100-degree days and single-digit nights sometimes a few months apart, and the cooling system takes the hit both times.
What that means for you, practically
A few things worth doing at home, none of them hard.
Check the level regularly, not just when something seems wrong. You already know where the reservoir is and what the lines mean from last lesson. Get in the habit of glancing at it when you check your oil. Takes ten seconds.
Look at the color. Should be a clear, bright color — greenish, orange, pink depending on the type your car uses. If it looks rusty brown or has stuff floating in it, that's old coolant breaking down, and it's worth getting flushed. Shops will tell you an interval, usually somewhere around 2 to 5 years depending on the coolant type. Check your owner's manual for the actual number instead of guessing.
Never open a hot radiator cap. I mean this one plainly, not as a scare tactic. The system's pressurized when it's hot, and pressurized hot coolant coming out at you is a real burn risk, not a hypothetical one. Wait till the engine's cool. If you're not sure, wait longer than you think you need to.
Sniff around the engine bay occasionally. I mentioned this before — a sweet smell under the hood is coolant, and it usually means a small leak somewhere before it ever shows up on your temperature gauge. Catching it there is catching it cheap. Catching it later, when the gauge is climbing on the freeway, is not.
A quick story, since we're on the subject of checking things yourself
Last spring I had my nephew Maverick out in the driveway learning to check his own oil. Pulled the dipstick out just like I showed him, held it up to look at the level, and then wiped it off on his shirt instead of grabbing the rag sitting right there on the fender.
I didn't say a word. Just watched it happen. You only do that once. He looked down at the streak on his shirt and got the lesson faster than anything I could've told him.
I bring it up here because it's the same idea with coolant, honestly — have the right thing within arm's reach before you start, a rag, a funnel, whatever, so you're not improvising with your shirt or your sleeve. Small thing. Saves you a mess and, in Maverick's case, some grief from his mom about the shirt.
My opinion, stated plainly again: coolant gets ignored here more than it should, because people file it under "winter stuff" and stop thinking about it the other nine months. It's a year-round system doing year-round work. Treat it that way.
Before next time
Go check your coolant color in daylight, not just the level. If it looks rusty or cloudy instead of a clean color, make a note to ask about a flush next time you're at a shop.
